Programme: Redevelopment of a building complex located in the south-west part of the city of San Paolo, Brazil (Rio Pequeno favèla), and its transformation into a multi-functional centre for educational and cultural activities, primarily for niños da rua.
The 830 sq m site is bordered on two sides by urban streets and on the other two by residential sites. Two buildings that have grown irregularly over time used as a small jewellery factory occupied the site. Prior to the project, the buildings were devoid of any direct connection, and their respective floor slabs were shifted by approximately half a floor height.
Our project inserted an integrated system of spaces containing classrooms, theatres and music and dance halls, offices for local associations, workshops for professional training, restaurant services and residences, as well as open spaces for recreational activities and play. The radical functional transformation of the building complex was made possible by one primary necessity: the total reorganisation of circulation, beginning with the creation of a direct connection between the two existing volumes.
The project also involved a limited increase to the total volume required to contain the new activities called for in the functional programme. Finally, the project worked towards ensuring accessibility for the handicapped to all spaces of the new multi-functional centre as well as eliminating the (highly toxic) concrete-asbestos roof of the main volume, substituting it with a new accessible roof with an open-air theatre and a small swimming pool for children.
The final step involved reconfiguring the exterior spaces as play areas, open-air dining areas and small gardens. In order to optimise the use of the interior spaces the stairs and circulation of the new centre were located outside of the buildings, creating a new steel skin. Two new staircases ensure vertical connections between the shifted plates of the two buildings, while a system of walkways connects the interior spaces with the roof in different points. Exterior ramps and stairs spaces provide new connections between the different levels.
